At the 38th Annual ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet held at Rutgers University, W.J. Castle, P.E & Associates, P.C. was presented with the Distinguished Award for the Pedestrian Bridge Design/Build category for their project at Girl Scout Camp Laughing Waters located in Gilbertsville, PA.
The Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania planned to re-design the camp site at Camp Laughing Waters located in Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania to include a new route for pedestrians to cross Swamp Creek. W.J. Castle, P.E. & Associates, P.C., was responsible for all engineering and construction management of the bridge and foundations. This 140’-0” steel bridge was provided by “Eagle Bridge” of Canada and pre-fabricated into two modules and shipped to the site, ready for installation. The bridge is 8 feet wide and was designed for both pedestrian (85#/S.F.) and small vehicle (10, 000 lbs). The total weight of the bridge is approximately 60,000 lbs.
Hydro-Marine Construction Co., Inc. was responsible for the construction from the start of the project to final installation. A foundation system using “Chance” Helical Piles was used in order to eliminate large spread footings. The construction of the bridge was started in April of 2008 and completed by June 2008 at a cost of $421,000.00.
